Botox Q & A

How does BOTOX® work?

Injectables, such as BOTOX, Dysport®, and Xeomin®, are made from a purified substance derived from the bacteria clostridium botulinum. When injected beneath the skin on the face it eliminates the appearance of lines around the eyes (crow’s feet) and on the forehead (frown lines). Unlike dermal fillers used to fill wrinkles, botulinum injectables work by temporarily preventing muscle movement. By preventing individuals from making these unwanted facial creases, these injectables also prevents such wrinkles from becoming more pronounced.

How long do BOTOX/DYSPORT/XEOMIN results last?

The results of botulinum injectables appear within the first week with full effects seen by the second week. Dysport  may yield slightly more rapid results. As BOTOX, Dysport, or Xeomin wears off, facial lines slowly return to their pre-treatment appearance, although satisfied patients generally opt for a follow-up injection before that occurs.

Are botulinum injectables, such as BOTOX, safe?

BOTOX is one of the most extensively studied medically-administered aesthetic treatments ever. It has been reviewed in literally hundreds of medical journals and been used for cosmetic purposes in this country for well more than a decade. BOTOX is approved for cosmetic use in 78 other countries, as well.

What does a botulinum injectable procedure entail?

Injection with a botulinum injectable is a simple, quick and relatively pain-free office treatment that doesn’t require any downtime. The needles used to inject BOTOX, Dysport, or Xeomin are ultra thin, therefore, pain is not an issue for most patients. The majority liken the sensation to that of a tolerable pinch. Still, individuals who are particularly sensitive or afraid of needles can choose to have a topical numbing cream applied a half hour prior to their treatment.

Why do some people who have BOTOX or BOTOX-like injections look frozen and others completely natural?

When people have those obvious ripples, glistening foreheads or expressionless faces, it’s not because they have had a botulinum injectable, but rather, because it was poorly administered. Botulinum injectables are technique-sensitive treatments, which is why it is imperative to seek out an experienced medical professional, such as the ones at Lakeshore Renewal, for optimal results.
