Dermal Filler Q & A

What is a dermal filler?

A dermal filler made of hyaluronic acid, a synthetic version of a substance that occurs naturally in the body. When injected into the face, dermal fillers  plump up creases, lines, and wrinkles, for a substantially more youthful appearance. In addition to wrinkles, dermal fillers are also highly effective in adding volume to the mid-face, an area that can become hollowed looking as a result of the aging process. When administered to the mid-face, dermal fillers also lift sagging cheeks, which is why the treatment is sometimes referred to as “a liquid facelift.” Dermal fillers are often used to add fullness to the lips, which can also thin out with age, as well as filling in under-eye hollows that can make individuals appear tired.  Lakeshore Renewal has the family of Restylane® products available to provide natural looking improvements to cosmetic areas of concern.

Radiesse® is also an available dermal filler at Lakeshore Renewal for patients who do not desire hyaluronic acid.  It differs from Restylane products as Radiesse is an aqueous gel comprised of calcium hydroxylapatite microshperes.

How do dermal fillers work?

Hyaluronic acid is a sugar-based substance. It can maintain moisture and nutrients within the skin cells, thereby providing the appearance of volume and suppleness. Like collagen, hyaluronic acid is naturally manufactured by the body, but the skin's ability to produce hyaluronic acid is reduced with age. Dermal fillers contain hyaluronic particles and is made into a smooth gel. Once injected, the gel replenishes the hyaluronic acid that has been lost, creating a smoother, more youthful appearance.

Radiesse provides immediate volume once injected to the area of concern, but continues to work by stimulating your body to produce its own natural collagen.

What does treatment entail?

This is a simple, 30-minute office procedure that does not entail any recovery time. In fact, some people have treatment during their lunch break and return to work. The injections may cause some minor discomfort and mild redness or swelling afterward, but both will quickly resolve on their own.

How long do the benefits of a dermal filler treatment last?

Everyone is different, but in general the benefits of a dermal filler last a full year, and for some women and men, even longer. As effects begin to fade, the procedure can be repeated. When administered by an experienced medical professional like Ms. Ranallo or Dr. Adams, dermal fillers can restore a youthful appearance to one’s face while still looking natural.
